Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens

The Royal Botanic Gardens were founded in 1816 by the Governor Macquarie. First Colonial Botanist was appointed in 1817 in the person of Charles Fraser.

In 1848 Charles Moore is taking the roll of the director of the Botanic Gardens. He occupies this post for the next 48 years (1848–96). Under his direction the Botanic Gardens are modernized developed in the form we see today.

In 1990 the Tropical Centre glasshouses was opened to the public.

In 2003 the business name of the organisation was changed from the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney to the Botanic Gardens Trust.

Trivia: The Royal Botanic Gardens are the oldest scientific institution in Australia.

The Royal Botanic Gardens are easily accessed from Circular Quay train station (5-10min walk). Buses and ferries are stopping at Circular Quay too. See map.
