Hyde Park Barracks Museum

brief history ...

Hyde Park Barracks plan
Few landmarks in Sydney, have such a rich history like the Hyde Park Barracks. They were build under Governor Macquarie's order and were designed by a convict architect by the name of Francis Greenway.

The construction of the Hyde Park Barracks started in 1817 and was completed in 1819. Governor Macquarie was so happy with the result that he granted a full pardon to Francis Greenway.

The original destination of the Hyde Park Barracks was to host around 600 convicts.
