Australian Akubra Hat
about ...
© Akubra Pty Ltd
The Akubra hat is one if most recognized
Australian icons. Claimed to be derived from an Indigenous Australian word, Akubra is the company name of one of
Australia's most famous producers of hats.
While is not cheap, the Akubra hat is not very expensive and I think that is making a very good value for money gift or souvenir, that is for sure an authentic and traditional
Australian item.
brief history ...
© Akubra Pty Ltd
The original hat-making factory, not called Akubra at that time, was founded in the early 1870s by Benjamin Dunkerley. A recent immigrant to
Australia, Dunkerley set up shop in Tasmania after inventing a machine that removed the hair tip from rabbit fur, leaving the softer under-fur for use in the making of felt hats.
Dunkerley and his family relocated to
Sydney, Surry Hills in the 1880's where he opened a small hat factory.
After Benjamin Dunkerley's death in 1918, the company was managed by his son in law Stephen Keir who created the brand name Akubra. In 1970s, the company relocate again, to larger premises in Kempsey. Today, the company is still family own.
