The first ferry line was opened in 1854, with a steam paddler named The Brothers, connecting the City of Sydney with Manly.

Today Sydney Ferries are vital part of Sydney facilitating a quick access to many locations around Sydney Harbour and Parramatta River.

Sydney ferries are divided into the following vessel classes:

  • 4 Freshwater class
  • 2 Lady class
  • 9 First Fleet class
  • 3 Jet Cats
  • 7 River Cats
  • 2 Harbour Cats
  • 4 Super Cats

The hub for the Sydney Ferries is the Circular Quay, which is the departing point for all Sydney ferries lines. Circular Quay has six wharfs and the departure wharfs are as follows:

  • Wharf 1 - not used
  • Wharf 2 - Manly Jet Cat, Taronga Zoo, Mosman Bay (Sundays)
  • Wharf 3 - Manly
  • Wharf 4 - Watson Bay, Mosman Bay, Harbour Sights Cruises, Neutral Bay, Woollwich (Sundays)
  • Wharf 5 - Parramatta, Pyrmont Bay, Woollwich, Birkenhead
  • Wharf 6 - not used
